Susan McGalla Just Wants People To Work Hard, Not Get Caught Up In Stereotypes

Susan McGalla is a successful executive who hasn’t let anything deter her from her dreams. She is the founder of P3 Executive Consulting in Pittsburgh, a Director of Strategic Planning and Growth for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, and the former president of American Eagle. Susan McGalla advises other startup companies and large corporations in both the retail and financial industries, is on the boards of charitable organizations like the Magee-Women’s Hospital’s Research Institute, and is on the Board of Advisors at her alma mater Mount Union College. She has spoken at universities and gatherings for young women where she has encouraged them to pursue their dreams in the field that they want.

The way Susan McGalla encourages these young women is by giving them a different perspective than what they may have heard from their peers or the mainstream media. For her, achieving her career goals was not about “breaking the glass ceiling” that is sometimes referred to in stereotyping women’s roles in the workplace. Instead, McGalla believes in working hard like her parents taught her at a young age, and applying that work ethic at every job she does. She has never expected anything to be handed freely to her because of her gender, and is against any sort of entitlements for women.

Susan McGalla grew up in a small town in East Liverpool, OH and was taught from a young age that life would be difficult and she’d have to work for her dreams on about.me. She attributes much of her success in life to the principles her parents taught her and holds them up as shiny examples to be revered. She got her bachelor’s from Mount Union College and got a corporate position at Joseph Horne Company in 1986. After 8 years there, she became a Chief Merchandising Officer with American Eagle Outfitters in 1994, the company with which she would ascend to her executive career on ireport.cnn.com. McGalla had her obstacles throughout her 15 years there, but her hard work and ideas paid off as she helped the company reshape their brand, and attract a lot more customers through new fashion designs after becoming president of the entire brand. In 2009, McGalla joined the board at HFF, and not long after formed P3 Executive Consulting, LLC.

Helane Morrison and the high expectations of compliance officers

I recently read a very interesting article about the fast growing career of compliance officers. The field has recently seen the growth of 10 percent a year and universities are creating degree programs for the occupation. The growth is tied to the regulations that were implemented due to the 2008 financial crisis. An officer who can assess the conduct of a company has become a necessity.

The role of a compliance officer is to make sure that the company is aware of and operating within the bounds of current regulations. This individual can recognize breaches of regulations, resolve the offense and ensure that it won’t be repeated.

An ideal compliance officer has a background in law or accounting and must have the ability to form good relationships with coworkers.

Helane Morrison is a dynamic woman. I was impressed by her education and her extensive experience. Morrison earned a B.S. from Northwestern University for Journalism and a Doctorate of Law from the University of California at Berkely School of Law. I was impressed by her accomplishments, she clerked for Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Richard A. Posner. Morrison made partner at the law firm of Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk and Rabikn in just five years. This was followed by an impressive career in the San Fransico office of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Morrison ran the San Fransisco division of the SEC and held the titles of Regional Director and District Administrator. Morrison successfully enforced regulations. Under her leadership charges were brought and convictions received against Republic New York, Dean Witter, and California Micro Devices.

Since 2007 Helane has been employed as the Managing Director, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Hall Capital Partners LLC. Morrison is also a member of the company’s Executive Committee.
Morrison holds positions on the Board of the Regional Parks Foundation and the Hedge Fund Subcommittee of the American Bar Association. It is a job that requires a high level of business and legal knowledge. Morrison exemplifies these qualities and displays dedication, honor, and integrity in her professional life.
